Feline Fee Waive Success!
Success! 44 Cats and 17 Kitte
ns (61 felines) have been adopted in the first 21 days of June thanks to our fee waive promotion. In 2008, only 11 cats and 22 kittens (33 feline) were adopted during the same time period. Thank you to all who are helping us to save more lives!

Freaks-n-Geeks Tattoo Sideshow, the West Asheville shop, is holding a month-long “Tattoos for Life” fundraiser to benefit Asheville Humane Society. The fundraiser will be held June 1-30 at the shop, located at 745 Haywood Rd. The “Tattoos for Life” benefit is made up of two elements. Patrons may stop by the shop between noon and 8 p.m. every day of the week to purchase raffle tickets. Tickets will be on sale for $5 each or three for $10. The winning raffle ticket will be drawn on July 1 and the winner will receive one free pet or animal tattoo of their choice worth up to $500. All proceeds from the raffle will benefit Asheville Humane Society.
The second part of the campaign will focus on the tangible needs of the Humane Society. Animal-lovers are asked to donate canned dog and cat food, dog treats, cat litter, leashes, bleach and blankets. For a complete list of needs, click on www.ashevillehumane.org/donate/donate-goods. Each donor will receive a $10 coupon toward a tattoo from one of the experienced artists at Freaks-n-Geeks.
“Tattoos for Life” is the brainchild of Freaks-n-Geeks co-owner Tiffany Leach. Prior to her career as a tattooist, Leach was a veterinary technician. She’s a lifelong animal lover and a 20-year vegetarian.

Fee Waive on Cats 9 Months and Older!
It’s that time again; spring and summer, when Asheville Humane Society (AHS) becomes inundated with kittens. Kittens are usually born in the warmer months of the year. When owners neglect to spay or neuter their cats, the resulting litters are often surrendered to the AHS shelter.
“We’ve been reviewing our 2008 statistics and were astounded to see that our intake of cats and kittens more than tripled in June of last year compared to how many we received in January,” says Shelly Moore, president and CEO of AHS. “This clearly demonstrates what an impact it has on the community when you don’t spay or neuter your pets. In fact, it’s so important to adopt cats in the summer that we are waiving our adoption fees on cats nine months and older in June.”
In addition to waiving adoption fees on cats nine months and older, AHS is bringing attention to the swelling numbers of felines at the shelter, by holding an Adopt-A-Cat Month Photo Contest. The winner of the contest will serve as ‘spokescat’ for next year’s Adopt-A-Cat month. Cat Food Recall
Nutro Products Announces Voluntary Recall of Limited Range of Dry Cat Food Products
Nutro Products announced a voluntary recall of select varieties of NUTRO NATURAL CHOICE COMPLETE CARE Dry Cat Foods and NUTRO MAX Cat Dry Foods with "Best If Used By Dates" between May 12, 2010 and August 22, 2010. The cat food is being voluntarily recalled in the United States and ten additional countries. This recall is due to incorrect levels of zinc and potassium in the finished product resulting from a production error by a US-based premix supplier.
Two mineral premixes were affected. One premix contained excessive levels of zinc and under-supplemented potassium. The second premix under-supplemented potassium. Both zinc and potassium are essential nutrients for cats and are added as nutritional supplements to NUTRO dry cat food.
This issue was identified during an audit of our documentation from the supplier. An extensive review confirmed that only these two premixes were affected. This recall does not affect any NUTRO dog food products, wet dog or cat food, or dog and cat treats.
Affected product was distributed to retail customers in all 50 states, as well as to customers in Canada, Mexico, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, New Zealand, and Israel. NUTRO is working with all distributors and retail customers, in both the US and internationally, to ensure that the recalled products are not on store shelves. These products should not be sold or distributed further.
Consumers who have purchased affected product should immediately discontinue feeding the product to their cats, and switch to another product with a balanced nutritional profile. If a recalled food was eaten by a pet, cat owners should monitor their cat for symptoms, including a reduction in appetite or refusal of food, weight loss, vomiting or diarrhea. If your cat is experiencing health issues or is pregnant, please contact your veterinarian.
Consumers who have purchased product affected by this voluntary recall should return it to their retailer for a full refund or exchange for another NUTRO dry cat food product. Cat owners who have questions about the recall should call 1-800-833-5330 between the hours 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM CST, or visit www.nutroproducts.com.
